Sergei Mironov: Deployment of Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh unacceptable

Speaker of Russian Federation Council Sergey Mironov opposed sending of the Russian peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, it is a problem of the two sides, Armenia and Azerbaijan. In an interview with Echo of Moscow Mironov said that the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents hold meetings with the participation of RF President Dmitry Medvedev. He expressed hope that this format will continue.

Sergei Mironov, speaker of the Federation Council, had arrived today to Kabardino-Balkaria where he met with the republic's leadership, state functionaries and public representatives. During the meeting they discussed problems of the North Caucasus economy, in particular, those of distant pastures.

Russian Federation Council Prepares Laws for the Development of the Arctic

A panel of experts on the Arctic created under the chairmanship of the Federation Council will develop legislative proposals concerning the development of the Arctic region. The first meeting of Council was held on Friday. The Speaker of the Upper-House, Sergei Mironov, said that Russia was lagging behind in the formation of legislation on the Russian Arctic. Mr. Mironov said; "To date there is no law that would provide the legal basis for the development of this strategically important region of Russia."

Russia against unilateral Iran sanctions

A senior Russian parliament official has expressed opposition to unilateral sanctions against Iran after EU members made a decision to unilaterally impose additional embargos on Tehran. Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov told the weekly Novy Vzglyad that Russia is opposed to unilateral sanctions against Iran and those firms and countries working in collaboration with the country, IRNA reported.

The sixth Women's Culture Week as well as the fourth Women Forum between China and Russia kicked off here on Friday. Speaker of the Russian Federal Council, or the upper house of the parliament, Sergei Mironov extended his warm welcome to the inauguration of the event themed "Women and Economy." Russia’s Muslims And Buddhists Want Public Holidays For Their Faiths Too

Now that the Russian Duma has approved the Day of the Baptism of Rus’ as a public holiday, leaders of Russia’s Islamic and Buddhist communities say they want their faiths to be recognized in the same way, yet another example of the way in which Moscow’s efforts to use Orthodoxy to unite the country in fact is dividing them. After the Federation Council voted, Amir Gallyamov, the senator from the Amur oblast, proposed creating another holiday for the Day of the Adoption of Islam, and Buddhists, especially in Kalmykia, suggested that they should have a similar public holiday for their faith. If that happens, these would be the 10th and 11th such holidays. Federation Council Speaker Sergey Mironov agreed, saying that it would only be fair to take such a step.

The footage, shot last week in Russia's Duma, the 450-member lower house of parliament, showed three MPs frantically running from empty seat to seat in order to vote for fellow deputies who were playing truant after lunch. "You cannot call a situation where MPs run all round the chamber pushing buttons for absent colleagues anything other than a disgrace," said Sergei Mironov, leader of the Kremlin-friendly Just Russia party.
