Russia-Asia cooperation to top agenda

The Organizing Committee of the Baikal Economic Forum has held a meeting in Moscow, presided over by Sergei Mironov, speaker of the Russian Senate. It was announced at the end of the meeting that delegates from over 70 countries will be taking part in the 6th session of the BEF, which will take place in Irkutsk from September 7th to10th.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's proposed bill on toughening punishment for terrorists and their supporters has drawn flak from the rights activists and prominent lawmakers who have expressed fears that it might be applied to those who had no intention of aiding terrorism. Speaker of the Upper House Sergei Mironov was the only person to vote against the bill giving FSB, one of three successors of Soviet KGB, the right to issue warnings to individuals and organisations.

The Federation Council demands that MPs to come to work

Russia’s “sicknote” politicians will at least now be forced to produce a good reason for not attending parliamentary sessions. The State Duma has since accepted changes to the regulations that stipulate that the MP have to be present at the plenary sessions. Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov has been advocating the amendments for a long time, RIA Novosti reported. “Any MP, and any senator, who is receiving a massive, in Russian terms, salary must be aware that coming to the sessions is his main responsibility, for which he gets paid a lot of taxpayers’ money,” he said.

Medvedev tells Russians to stop 'everyday' bribery

President Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday said corruption permeated everyday life in Russia, warning anti-graft efforts would be fruitless unless ordinary Russians stopped handing out bribes. Upper house speaker Sergei Mironov said that the majority of those convicted of corruption were punished for giving bribes worth between 500 rubles (16 dollars) and 3,000 rubles (98 dollars).

Senior Chinese, Russian officials pledge to strengthen China-Russian friendship

Chairman of Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov on Tuesday held talks with visiting Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Hua Jianmin, pledging to keep on injecting new momentum into the deepening of bilateral relations of the two countries. Mironov lauded the development of Sino-Russian relationship and hailed the role of Sino-Russian Friendship, Peace and Development Council.

Russia on Monday said the expected election of Bronislaw Komorowski as Poland's president offered an opportunity to boost relations. 'Hopefully, Komorowski will help make the policy of closer relations between Moscow and Warsaw irreversible,' said Sergei Mironov, chairman of Russia's Federation Council.

Sergei Mironov: Deployment of Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh unacceptable

Speaker of Russian Federation Council Sergey Mironov opposed sending of the Russian peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, it is a problem of the two sides, Armenia and Azerbaijan. In an interview with Echo of Moscow Mironov said that the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents hold meetings with the participation of RF President Dmitry Medvedev. He expressed hope that this format will continue.

Russian Federation Council Prepares Laws for the Development of the Arctic

A panel of experts on the Arctic created under the chairmanship of the Federation Council will develop legislative proposals concerning the development of the Arctic region. The first meeting of Council was held on Friday. The Speaker of the Upper-House, Sergei Mironov, said that Russia was lagging behind in the formation of legislation on the Russian Arctic. Mr. Mironov said; "To date there is no law that would provide the legal basis for the development of this strategically important region of Russia."

Russia against unilateral Iran sanctions

A senior Russian parliament official has expressed opposition to unilateral sanctions against Iran after EU members made a decision to unilaterally impose additional embargos on Tehran. Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov told the weekly Novy Vzglyad that Russia is opposed to unilateral sanctions against Iran and those firms and countries working in collaboration with the country, IRNA reported.
