International conference ‘Climate as politics’

29.04.2010

April, 29. Chairman of the Federation Council, chairman of the political party Russia of Justice Sergei Mironov has participated in the international conference ‘Climate as politics’.

The participants of the conference have discussed social, economic and geopolitical consequences of climate change, the issues of atmospheric pollution reduction, implementation of energy saving technologies and sustainable territory development.

The leader of Russia of Justice fraction in the State Duma Nikolai Levichev hosted the conference. Also present were Secretary General of Socintern Louis Ayala, Russian and foreign experts and leaders of non-profit ecology organizations.

Chairman of the political party Russia of Justice Sergei Mironov was the first to deliver his speech during the conference. He said: “The wording of today’s conference title – ‘climate AS politics’ is not quite usual. Some of us suggested that it should be ‘climate AND politics’. But we wanted to stress that nowadays climate issues have become political issues, and severe political fights are triggered by climate issues.

As you all remember, the signing of Kyoto protocol was delayed and postponed for several years. It is not only the ecological, but also the political document that was able to demonstrate acute conflicts between Europe, United States, China, India, advanced and developing countries.

What is the main reason for transferring climate change discussion from scientific to political level? The answer is quite clear: if you control the country’s carbon dioxide emission, you control its industrial growth and consumption. It is all connected: the faster a country develops, the higher is population income and the higher is carbon dioxide emission. Thus you can control the economy of a region or a country through climate protection”.
