Sergei Mironov: "To restore the status quo “till August 8” is not a sufficient guarantee of preventing the bloodshed”
August 18. The Chairman of the Council of Federation Sergei Mironov said: “The present relations between Russia and Georgia as well as between Georgia and the unrecognized republics within its territory have changed cardinally and irreversibly after August 8. All the more it changed after the decision to close the military operation aimed at the peace-enforcement of Georgia was made".
According to Sergei Mironov, “the Russian side must insist on the internationally-controlled demilitarization of Georgoa. Further still it will be rational to create a buffer zone along the administrative boundary of South Ossetia on the model of Nagorno-Karabakh. Such a 10- or 15km-wide zone is to exclude the concentration of Georgian forces close to the boundary of South Ossetia much less firing its territories”.
