Sergei Mironov: "After all that has happened one can hardly conceive South Ossetia and Abkhazia as parts of Georgia”
August 12. The Chairman of the Council of Federation answered the questions for press after an emergency session of the Chamber Council held on August 11.
Sergei Mironov expressed the opinion that Russia operates on legitimate base and within the law, fulfilling her international obligations and in pursuance of Article 62 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation ‘on protection of Russian citizens abroad’. ‘We have no illusions about those who were staying behind the Mikhail Saakashvili’s back, who directed this barbaric act of aggression. Though the transoceanic patrons of Mister Saakashvili didn’t expect such a sharp, severe, adequate and, I should say, flash-like reaction from Russia, - commented Sergei Mironov. – I’m sure that everyone, including United Nations Security Council, would have enough of common sense to judge what has happened, who was the aggressor and who was the side that was enforced to protect its civilians”.
The Chairman of the Council of Federation expressed confidence that the development of the situation would not bring to “any and all the more strait-line impacts between Russia and USA”. But everybody in the world including USA must consider that no one has the right to kill Russian citizens, to perform acts of genocide against people, the speaker of the Russian parliament upper chamber said.
Answering the question about the impossible decisions of the Council of Federation Sergei Mironov explained that in this case establishing military prescriptive in South Ossetia is not concerned. "We have enlarged the peace-making troops for security of the Russian citizens. There is no need in consent of the Council of Federation”, he said.
If necessary the Council of Federation can be assembled within six hours. But for now the extraordinary session of the Council is not expected, Sergei Mironov said.
As concerns the mass media reaction Sergei Mironov said: “For some reason a lot of media, specially foreign media, has slept for twenty four hours when the whole city was just destroyed, when several thousands of defenseless citizens, among them children, women, old people, were just killed and those injured were finished off by Georgian tanks driving over the people. The world allegedly saw nothing. And when Russia was enforced to commit an act of coercion everybody started to speak about aggression against Georgia”.
Speaking on the actions performed by Russia the Chairman of the Council of Federation noticed that “there was no plan to occupy Georgia”. According to him, “the only thing that can be discussed is that after all that happened on the night of the 7th/8th of August one can hardly conceive South Ossetia and Abkhazia as parts of Georgia”.
Commenting the facts of United Nations inaction, Sergei Mironov said: “Once more we can see the very same double standards that our civilization has to face from time to time. I’m confident that objective information that is accessible must bring to different results during the session of the United Nations Security Council. At the same time UNO is the most authoritative organization of the international law. That is the reason for our diplomats to exert every effort to show what was really happening in the territory of South Ossetia within these days. There was genocide, conscious destruction of Ossetian people. Saakashvili seemed to have his territorial problems solved in this way”.
